Somalia has a 6-2-4 formal education structure. Primary school has an official entry age of six and a duration of six grades. Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary consists of grades 7 – 8, and upper secondary consists of grades 9 – 12.
In principle, school is neither free nor compulsory (US Dept of Labor, 2010 Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labor). Among other data sources, unique EPDC data collections for Somalia include household survey data from MICS (2006), and indicators derived from UIS data.
